Allegations Against Melissa Cournyer

A sample of the allegations made in the FINRA reported arbitration claim settlements and/or pending complaints for investment losses are as follows:

  • In a written complaint dated August 21, 2018, addressed to Bankers Life and Casualty Company (BLC), an insurance company affiliate of the Firm, [REDACTED] alleged that Bankers Life Securities, Inc. (the Firm) Registered Representative Melissa Counyer came to his house in April 2018 and asked him to sign a form giving permission for a deeper review of his holdings. [REDACTED] stated that in July of 2018, he received a packet stating his Variable Annuity was transferred from an outside institution to BLC without his permission. [REDACTED] stated that the funds have been released by BLC, but he was assessed surrender charges on his Variable Annuity that was surrendered to fund the BLC fixed annuity. Client asked BLC to reimburse all surrender charges. While the fixed annuity was issued by BLC, the Firm is reporting this complaint because the source of funding for the BLC annuity came from the sale of securities recommended by a registered representative of the Firm. Upon completion of its investigation, BLC determined that the purchase was suitable for the [REDACTED] and that he was made aware of the surrender charges assessed by the other institution.
  • In a written complaint dated January 30, 2020 and received on February 4, 2020, addressed to Bankers Life Securities, Inc. which was forwarded to Bankers Life and Casualty Company (BLC), an insurance company affiliate of the Firm, [REDACTED] alleged that a Premium Bonus Indexed Annuity (PBIA) purchased from BLC in June of 2017 was unsuitable. BLC determined that the complaint, which came from [REDACTED] attorney, misinterpreted fundamental provisions of the PBIA and that, properly interpreted in accordance with its language, the PBIA was suitable for [REDACTED]. BLC has offered to meet with [REDACTED] to ensure he is clear on the terms of his PBIA. While the PBIA sold to [REDACTED] was not a security and was issued by BLC, the Firm is reporting this complaint because the source of funding for the BLC annuity came from the sale of securities recommended by a registered representative of this Firm allegedly committed by Melissa Cournyer.
